Gulfport, Florida (AP) - A one eye, three-legged dog who won the title of the world ’s ugliest dog has died this summer.

The St. Petersburg Times in Florida reported that Gus, a Chinese crested dog, had cancer. He was 9 years old.

Gus was rescued from a bad home and went on to win the annual World ’s contest for ugliest dog at the Sonoma-Marin Fair in Northern California.

Gus came from humble origins. According to the fair, his adoptive family in Gulfport, Florida, rescued after learning what was kept in a box inside someone ’s garage.

The dog had a leg amputated because of a tumor of the skin and the loss of an eye in a cat fight.
