Are you aware that tutus have many different styles and each style has a specific name and a history attached to its development? No? Well, it's very true and it could amaze you that a tutu is simply not merely some flimsy fabric tied at the waist to make little girls look cute or adults look wispy and fairy like. In fact, there are at least four unique varieties of tutus and each one has a unique history and time period when it was developed and where it was used. In fact, tutus for adults were the original intent rather than for small children.

The 1st use of a tutu was in the French Courtroom in the 16th century and was long and heavy and reached to the ankle, not the typical mid-thigh, fluffy style we see today. The style we see most ballerinas have on and most adults would like to copy is called a pancake style and extends straight out from the hips and is usually 12 to 17 inches wide. Below is a quick breakdown of each style and a very short history the style.

The Romantic Tutu

This tutu's origin was in 18th century France and acknowledgment goes to Marie Camargo for its handiwork. Madame Camargo shortened the floor length skirt to mid calf to display her intricate footwork and was considered very scandalous for the period. In the 19th century the hemline was shortened further by Marie Taglioni. The skirt is 5 layers of tulle or muslin and length differs from below the knee to ankle.

The Bell Tutu

The bell tutu, while similar to the aforementioned tutu, extends slightly outward at the hips and is generally fuller. To create a bell shape use of netting and/or tulle is used. The style is displayed most prominently by Edgar Degas' paintings. The length is shorter than the knees and has three to five layers of fabric. It is much stiffer when compared with its predecessor the romantic tutu.

The Pancake Tutu

This is the style most often seen on ballerinas of today. It was in demand so audience members can easily see the complex leg and footwork prevalent in the late 18th century. In Russia, the style is called the Russian tutu and is alternatively known as the platter tutu. This tutu extends completely outward, comprised of 12 layers of stiff fabrics (net or crinoline) and uses a petticoat wire in a middle layer to maintain the flat shape.

The Powder Puff Tutu

The powder puff tutu, our final tutu, is also called the Balachine/Karinska tutu. This tutu emerged in the late 1950s and was designed by Barbara Karinska using chiffon. She made this tutu knee-length and it appeared in George Balachine's production of "Allegro Brillante." These are short tutus, and are made of soft tulle or a combination of mostly tulle and some net and a cousin of the bell tutu. There are 5 to 7 layers of tiered fabric each 1/2 inch longer than the previous layer.
